A night with the ATS-DD

September 17, 2016

Last night before bed, I charged the Advantage Tactical Sights - Dark Diamond front sight for 45 seconds under a 300 lumen flashlight, and put it in it’s holster. Then I went to bed.

Last night was a harvest moon, and my bedroom is mostly glass. It was bright, and shined onto my face all night. Obviously, I didn’t sleep well. At around 0300, I woke up and stepped outside to smoke and walk my dog. As a quick test, I drew my sidearm and took a look at the sight picture without my glasses.

First of all, the sight, while not chemstick bright anymore, was glowing more than enough to be visible in the moonlight. It’s a strange kind of glow, because it isn’t as bright as a tritium vial, but because it is so damn large, it’s still very easy to pick up in the dark.

More importantly, though, I could easily make the diamond without my glasses. If you are anything like me, you’ve thought about how you would employ your sidearm at night, without your glasses. Normal tritium night sights are visible, but indistinct. I am pretty sure I could hit a target, but distingusing between the front and read sights at night is not easy for me. I’m in my early 30’s, and more than able bodied, but I’m near sighted.

Previously, I’ve worked on my natural point of aim, so that I can at least shoot minute of badguy. Remember how I said my bedroom is almost entirely glass? Well, if I need to use my sidearm, I need to use it NOW. Since I can reliably say that my family is inside the house, anyone trying to go from outside to inside is probably not someone I would invite in. And now, I have a solution. The ATS-DD sights are big enough, and bright enough, that I believe I can use them without glasses, at night, and assuming my zero is good (the come from the factory shooting high, and you shim them down), I can hit targets.

That’ll do, pig. That’ll do.
